Alexander J. Goetting is a commercial litigator and securities arbitration attorney with a background in accounting, international tax, and municipal law. Drawing on his accounting background and experience as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Houston, he brings sharp advocacy and financial insight to complex legal disputes.

BIOGRAPHY

Alexander J. Goetting graduated magna cum laude from Baylor University with a BBA in Accounting and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Texas School of Law. While in law school, Mr. Goetting was a teaching assistant for UT’s Financial Methods for Lawyers class, a staff editor for the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas, and Energy Law, and the recipient of a Dean’s Achievement Award for Outstanding Student in Negotiation.

 

After graduating from law school, Mr. Goetting worked for Grant Thornton LLP as a Transfer Pricing Associate in the firm’s International Tax Services group. Looking to further develop his trial advocacy skills, Mr. Goetting then went to work as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Houston where he prosecuted a wide variety of cases under state law and city ordinances. In addition to prosecuting criminal cases, Mr. Goetting also represented the City of Houston in civil administrative matters, most notably in Commercial Establishment Sound Permit Revocation Hearings. While at the City Attorney’s Office, Mr. Goetting received the 2023 Edward A. Cazares Award for excellence and professionalism in municipal law.

 

Mr. Goetting joined Henneman Rau & Kirklin LLP in 2024, where his practice focuses on commercial litigation and securities arbitration. Mr. Goetting represents both individuals and businesses across the country and specializes in litigating restrictive covenants found in sale-of-business and employment agreements.

    REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE
    • Secured dismissal of a cryptocurrency fraud case against a financial advisor after successfully briefing and orally arguing a Motion to Dismiss in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.
    • Represented a Korean manufacturing company in a complex business dispute that favorably settled for seven figures immediately following Mr. Goetting’s direct examination of the company’s corporate representative during a Harris County jury trial.
    • Advised and represented both financial advisors and RIA firms in navigating advisor transitions involving allegations of improper competition, solicitation, breaches of confidentiality, and trade secret misappropriation in confidential FINRA and AAA arbitrations leading to favorable results.
    • Represented nationwide RIA firm in customer dispute involving allegations of inadequate supervision and oversight resulting in favorable settlement in FINRA arbitration.
    • Successfully prosecuted a variety of criminal cases on behalf of the City of Houston in a multitude of jury and bench trials and represented the City of Houston in numerous civil administrative hearings with favorable results.
    • Assisted in representing businesses dealing with revenue loss due to COVID-19 hardships and related landlord/tenant disputes.
    • Assisted in advising multinational businesses on international tax planning measures related to cross-border intercompany transactions and agreements by conducting benchmarking studies and drafting master and local files.
    • Assisted in representing the Texas Office of Consumer Credit Commissioner in cases filed on behalf of Texas residents in claims against usurious and fraudulent creditors.
